Set up Digihome

From checkout to your first words typed by the r1. Steps are shown for your computer.

01

What you need

Digihome has two halves. The Mac app does the listening, typing and talking to Claude Code. The pet lives on your r1: it shows what is going on and carries the side button and the wheel.

A Mac
Apple Silicon (M1 or later), macOS 13 or later, with Bluetooth.
An r1
One running compatible custom firmware (part 3). A guided installer for stock devices is still in development.
A license
$15, one-time, for up to 3 Macs. Get one.
For Agent mode
Claude Code installed and signed in on the Mac. Claude costs are separate.

Windows: in the works

A Windows version of Digihome is built and running on a test laptop: the app, the typing helper, the Bluetooth link and on-device speech. It has not been tried with a real r1 yet, and it is not for sale. See where it stands.

Tell us you want it, and we will let you know when it is ready.

Everything below is for the Mac. On Windows? Pick the Windows tab above.

02

Buy and install

  1. Buy Digihome. Checkout is by Polar, the merchant of record. Your receipt carries your license key and the Digihome download. The app downloads only after you have paid.
  2. Open the disk image (Digihome.dmg) and drag Digihome onto the Applications shortcut.
  3. Eject the disk image and open Digihome from Applications. Opened straight from the disk image, the app starts nothing and asks you to move it first.
  4. macOS asks once whether to open an app downloaded from the internet. Click Open. The app is signed and notarized, so there is nothing else to approve.
  5. Register: copy the license key from your receipt and press ⌘ V in the Digihome window. It registers by itself. To type the key instead, choose "Type it instead".

Each Mac you register takes one of your 3 seats. Until a Mac is registered, Digihome does not type.

03

Set up your r1

Digihome runs on an r1 with compatible custom firmware, in place of rabbitOS. Getting there is a one-time job of about two hours, done from the Mac's terminal.

Read this first

What changes on the r1

  • Unlocking the r1 voids its warranty and erases it.
  • The rabbit apps, cloud features and rabbit's updates stop running on it.
  • Going back to rabbitOS is possible only from the full backup you take first. Keep that backup private: it holds the r1's own serial number and keys.
  • You do this at your own risk.

The steps

From stock to Digihome

  1. Install the tools with Homebrew.
  2. Back up the whole r1, and check the backup.
  3. Unlock the bootloader.
  4. Make the system image with the script that ships inside Digihome, and flash it.
  5. Install the pet from the Digihome app (below).

You need about 25 GB free on the Mac, the r1 charged to at least half, and a USB cable that carries data (a charge-only cable is the most common reason the r1 is not seen). The full step-by-step guide covers every command. TODO(Sterling): where buyers get the guide.

Install the pet from the app

  1. In Digihome, choose Set up your r1.
  2. Plug the r1 straight into the Mac with a data cable, not through a hub or a display. Unplug any other Android phones.
  3. On the r1, allow USB debugging when it asks.
  4. Charge first if the app says so: it needs 30%, or 15% while charging.
  5. Choose Install the pet. The app checks the build, installs it and waits for the pet to come back.
  6. Pair over Bluetooth when the app asks. macOS lists the r1 as r1-pet.

The app uses adb for this one step. If it says "This Mac needs adb", install Android's platform tools (brew install --cask android-platform-tools) and try again.

04

Bluetooth and typing

Digihome asks macOS for two things. You click both yourself; nothing grants them for you.

Bluetooth
Asked the first time Digihome uses it. Allow it. If you said no, switch it on in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Bluetooth.
Typing
Your words are typed by a small helper called Digihome Typing, with its own permission. Allow it in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility. On macOS 27 and later that list is called Device Control and Data Access; Digihome's Setup names the right one for your Mac and turns green when the permission lands.
Agent mode
On first launch Digihome downloads the Claude Agent SDK from registry.npmjs.org (Anthropic's terms apply). Agent mode also needs Claude Code installed and signed in on the Mac; until then the wheel stays on Whisper auto and the r1 says why.
The voice model
The first time, Digihome downloads its speech model once (about 465 MB). The r1 shows the progress, for example "Voice is downloading - 40%".

Talk, type and answer

The pet on the r1 screen, listening
The pet on the r1
Modes
Turn the wheel to step through Whisper, Whisper auto and Agent. The pet shows which one you are in: a paper plane for Whisper, a pilot's cap for Whisper auto, its agent outfit for Agent.
Talk
Hold the side button, speak, let go. Speech is turned into text on your Mac and typed where your cursor is, in any app.
Return or Undo
In Whisper, a sheet on the r1 offers Return (press Enter for that text) and Undo (take it back).
Whisper auto
Return is pressed for you the moment the words land, with no sheet.
Agent
Talk to Claude from the r1. Agent mode keeps one ongoing conversation, the Pet thread, running on your Mac, so it remembers earlier requests. Start fresh in the Mac app's Settings begins a new one. Agent requests go to Anthropic.
Answer cards
Each tool the Pet thread wants to use, like running a command or editing a file, shows as a card on the r1 tagged "Pet thread". Tap Allow or Deny; nothing runs until you do. While a card is open, the side button does not record.

06

Settings

Open Digihome and choose Settings.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
Bluetooth is how the r1 links by default. Wi-Fi is off until you switch it on; then keep the r1 on the same network as the Mac.
Open at login
On by default. Closing the window keeps the pet running; click the Dock icon to bring the window back. Quit with ⌘ Q.
Update r1
When a newer pet is ready, Settings offers it and sends it over the link. The r1 runs the exact build sent.
Pet thread
With Agent mode ready this row is Start fresh: the Pet thread forgets its conversation and your next words start a new one. When it is not ready, it says why (downloading, no internet, Claude Code not installed or signed in), with Try again after a failed download.
Pet voice
Whether the pet speaks its answers through the r1.
License
Shows that this Mac is registered. The terms are in the Digihome License Agreement.

Troubleshooting

Quoted messages are what Digihome or the pet says.

"Allow typing in System Settings"

Digihome Typing does not have its permission yet. Switch it on in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility (Device Control and Data Access on macOS 27). If it was already on, switch it off and on again.

"Voice needs internet once to download"

The speech model downloads once, on first run. Connect to the internet and choose Try again in Setup; it is also tried again at the next start.

"This key cannot register another Mac"

All 3 seats are in use, or the purchase was refunded. Free a seat from the link in your receipt, then register again.

Digihome opens but does nothing

It was opened from the disk image. Drag it into Applications, eject the image, and open it from there.

The app does not see the r1 over USB

Use a cable that carries data, plug straight into the Mac, unplug other Android phones, and quit anything else that might hold the USB port (Android Studio, browser-based flashers). If the app says "Unplug and plug back in", do that.

"Charge the r1 first"

Installing needs 30% battery, or 15% while the r1 is charging.

"Wi-Fi is off and macOS is blocking Bluetooth"

The r1 has no way to reach the Mac. Allow Bluetooth for Digihome in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Bluetooth, or switch Wi-Fi on in Settings.

The wheel skips Agent

Agent mode is not ready on this Mac yet. The r1 says why after "agent -", for example "downloading" or "no internet". Check Settings, Agent mode: it names the reason and offers Try again after a failed download. Claude Code must be installed and signed in (claude auth status).

Where are the logs?

In ~/Library/Application Support/Digital Pet/logs/. They hold event names and timings, not what you said. Send them with your feedback if something broke.

Still stuck? Send feedback.

08

Move or remove

Another Mac
Install and register the same way. One license covers up to 3 Macs.
Free a seat
Use the link in your receipt. Freeing a Mac's seat turns Digihome off on that Mac.
Refund
For any reason within 15 days, through the link on your receipt. A refund turns the key off.
Remove it
Quit Digihome and drag it to the Bin. To remove its logs too, delete ~/Library/Application Support/Digital Pet.

For agents

If you are an AI agent reading this for someone, start here. Ask the person before you send feedback or buy anything for them.

/llms.txt
What Digihome is, what it costs, what it needs, and the setup steps, in plain text.
/.well-known/agent.json
Agent card: what this site can do for you, including the give feedback action.
/feedback.schema.json
JSON Schema for one feedback message. The form above and agents share it.
draft_feedback in page
Where the browser offers navigator.modelContext, this page registers a tool that fills the form above and checks it. Nothing is sent without the person.
